Amity Boys Tennis Eyes SCC and CIAC Titles After Strong Start

As spring sports are in full swing, many teams are seeing great success. Among these is the boys tennis team. Led by senior captains Akshay Bulsara, Jacob Storeygard, Jordan Hass, and Vikas Rajendran, and coaches Mike Bullers, Zach Brocklehurst, and Aaman Malik, the Spartans have attained a near perfect win to loss record of 8-1.

 

The captains, along with their coaches, have played a big role in the success of the team as a whole. With talks of this year’s team being one of the best teams the program has seen in over a decade, the stakes have been very high.

 

Senior captain Akshay Bulsara said, “This year’s team has the potential to win not only the Southern Connecticut Conference championship but also the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference championship.” He continued, “It’s the best team we have had in a while but we need to remind ourselves to stay humble and take one match at a time.” Senior captain Jacob Storeygard reinforced this idea when he said, “We all want to win the championships and the titles but it’s important not to become overconfident and continue to take one practice and match at a time.”

 

There is clear talent throughout the team. One of the standout players consists of Thomas Sirichantho. This junior has been playing number one singles for the past three years and continues to show why he is recognized as a top player in New England.

 

Although Sirichantho’s collegiate plans are not yet decided, he plans to pursue his career in tennis at the Division I level already housing offers from various colleges.

 

“My goal is to win the invitational tournament at the end of the year to represent the Amity tennis program and solidify my high school career portfolio in hopes to compete at the highest level in college,” he said his goals for the season.

 

The team’s clear rival has been Fairfield Prep with their only loss this season coming from the Jesuits. However, the Spartans are confident in their abilities and look to defeat them when they play them again later in the regular season.

 

One standout team for the Spartans comes in the doubles lineup with senior Mantas Janusuitas and sophomore Vince Forcetii.

 

Forcetti commented on his and Mantas’ individual match against Fairfield Prep saying “It was a battle. One of the closest matches I’ve ever played. In total we lost more games but won the match. Being down the whole match yet still winning was an amazing feeling.”

 

He doesn’t take all the credit though as he added, “Props go to Janusaitas for grinding out points from the baseline and getting balls for me to finish and my coach for hyping me when we were down.”

 

This team will be something to look out for during the post season and individually look to make a deep run in the doubles invitational tournament.

 

The Spartans also look to make a deep run in the post season this year. They have successfully secured the two seed in the Southern Connecticut Conference Championship and are currently ranked fourth among the top teams in the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference Championship Class LL.

 

The Spartans will also send some players to the invitational tournament at the end of the year where they will compete individually, while still representing Amity against many the best players from other schools in the state.

 

Boys tennis has high hopes for the following months. With the hard work and dedication the team has already shown, the Spartans will not fall short of these.
