Ina Malloy - Mystic 2003

This course is designed to teach you basic Camera Controls which will enable you to take properly exposed negatives and introduce you to Printing in the darkroom.

You will learn how to read a photograph just as you would read a book by answering certain Questions in order.     

You will become familiar with Darkroom Equipment and their proper usage.

Question of the Day? What kind of light is paper sensitive to?

These questions will enable your instructor to listen to your thought without utilizing precious lab time during the school day.

Question of the Day? What is a Latent Image? How long will it last

You will learn how to Crop you picture to keep only that part of the negative you want to print .        

Question of the Day? Does f/1.4 let inmore or less light than f/22?

You will learn how to adjust the Contrast by the using of a variety of Filters. These filters will filter the light from the enlarger before it hits the light sensitive papers just as sunglasses affect how you see the world. Filters affect how the light sensitive paper receives the light/image. 

Question of the Day? What are outdoor Shutter Speed settings?

You will learn how to correct exposure in certain areas of your picture while keeping other parts unaffected. This process of Burning and Dodging will become an integral part of your printing..

Question of the Day? What SS setting would you use to allow motion to become a ghost?

your print exemplifies? 

You must choose at least 1

You might choose Simplicity, which means it is obvious what is going on in your picture and it is not busy.

Often a single element. ( ex. A boot)

Question of the Day? What are 2 variables in Processing Film?

You might choose Balance, which means that your picture is symetrical with multiple elements. Remember negative space can be counted as one of your elements ( ex. A landscape with land ,water and sky)

Question of the Day? Your Film processed clear why?

You might choose from Framing, which means your focal point is surrounded by another element of your picture..... (ex. A baby in a car seat)

Question of the Day? What causes reticulation marks in film?

You might choose from Mergers which come in 2 ways. Good mergers are overlaps which are intentional and help your image. The other is a Poor Merger which interferes with your original intention of the picture. (ex. a person with a tree limb seemingly coming from their ear when in a 3-D world, the tree was 50+ feet away)

Question of the Day? If a negative is blurry why did it happen?

Rule of Thirds, is a mapping system for identifying the artist's placement of the focal point. Imagine a Tic-Tac-Toe board overlaying your print, which quadrant does your Focal Point fall or which intersection does it fall onto (ex. Upper left, center, etc...)

Question of the Day? What is Cropping and what 3 methods are there?

Sabbatier Affect is the origin

 of Solarization . Developed by Man Ray it will give a chrome like affect to your print. Halo affect.

Question of the Day? Filters act like sunglasses to what?

Man Ray originated the Photogram affect, you will be able to make one of these with just an object or an object combiined with a negative for a double exposure.

Question of the Day? What are the 2 variables in the darkroom?

Reverse Prints,

are negative images of your positive prints and often create a Surreal Mise-en-Scene which is very Spooky.

Question of the Day? What shutter Speed is used to stop motion?

Reliefs

Are 3-D prints made from multiple prints and layering using .3-D O's to pop your piece of the print up

Question of the Day? What aperture will blurr your background?

Globes

are formed by making a print into strips and stitching them together.

Question of the Day? What is the difference between mounting & matting?

Weaving

Usually thought of with fabric is a presentation option that makes for an interesting print. Enlargements are cut into thin strips and woven to give the print a different affect.

You will be expected to scan a negative into the computer and manipulate it with Adobe Photoshop 7.0 or CS2

While using Adobe, you will be expected to learn how to change the mode from Greyscale to RGB.

While using Adobe, you will be expected to learn how to adjust the contrast

While using Adobe, you will be expected to learn how to correct scratches and dirt spots.

While using Adobe, you will be expected to learn how to combine images from seperate files.

While using Adobe, you will be expected to learn how to create an advertisement including text.

While using Adobe, you will be expected to learn how to apply the may filters to achieve a variety of affects.

Photo I Semester Requirements:

1. 20 Successful Prints

  8 Instructional Series

* First Print : Learn how to use the enlarger

*Cropping Series 1 full negative and one zoomed in

*Filters -Zero 2.5 5 and 5 with a 10% afterburn + Poster

* Burning & Dodging Show before and after manipulation

*Reverse Print Show before and after manipulation

*Solarization Show before and after manipulation

* Photogram with or without negative

* Hand Coloring /Toning

2. 10 Labeled Test strips

3. 10 Write-ups with a grade of 8 or better * (Incentive)

4. 10 Prints of your choice Mounted/Matted

5. 5 Homework assignments completed
