Burn & Dodge
Students will select from their library of negatives, an image that has a light area or an area which is too dark. Students will create a Variable Timed Test Strip in each area and determine the difference. When printing, students will determine which printing time is the least for the image. Expose the whole image for that least amount of time with a filter. Cover the area that only needs that amount of time, allowing the other area which needs more time to be re-exposed when you turn on the enlarger light for a 2nd time. Make sure that the area you are blocking from the 2nd exposure of light is covered by something which is opaque and constantly moving. By constantly moving you will prevent a shadow line outlining each area. If the area is "Landlocked" you must either cut a matching hole out of a black piece of paper or make a lollipop shape matching the dark area and attach a paperclip to it as the stem to reach an interior area.
