Foreign Language Department

The goal of Amity's Foreign Language program is to provide students with an insight into other peoples' languages, and civilizations. This insight should inspire an acceptance and appreciation of social and cultural diversity which, in turn, will assist students to develop interpersonal and communication skills needed in the global community. In modern languages, the aim is provided by means of the following general objectives:

1. To understand with facility the target language spoken at moderate speed
2. To speak the target language with fluency, pronunciation, and intonation understood by a native speaker
3. To read and comprehend in the target language a variety of works which illustrate culture and civilization
4. To write in the target language about a variety of topics with significant precision and in detail.

As a result of the study of Latin, the student will demonstrate:

1. An increased ability to read and understand Latin prose
2. A working knowledge of the basic structures of Latin
3. An increased understanding of English and of the nature of language in general
4. An increased knowledge of the customs, daily life institutions, mythology, history and achievements of the Roman people.

In grades nine through twelve, foreign languages are elective. In addition to French and Spanish, Latin is introduced at the ninth-grade level. Because of the nature of the foreign language program, students are strongly urged to remain in the same level unless advised to change by their teacher. Students who have been successful in the study of a first language are encouraged to begin the study of a second language.
