Introduction Tables Graphics Managing and Uploading your Site

Creating and Managing Tables

To get your table, go to "Insert" on the menu bar, and pull down to "Table." A window will then open which will give you lots of options. The best way to learn tables is to play around with them. You can alway use "edit-undo" if you goof up.

I recently learned (by making a mistake) that you can set the minimum size of a table, but not the maximum. If you put graphics in your table which exceed the recommended pixel width of your page (approximately 763 pixels for folks viewing with a screen resolution of 1024x768 or larger) then your table will expand to hold the image, and the person viewing your webpage will have to scroll to the left and the right to see the entire page - NOT a good thing.

I'm going to insert a table below. I will make it 80% of the page. It will have four columns and five rows. I will leave a border on so you can see the boundaries. Then I will nest some tables within the table.(P.S. for you math buffs, 80% of 763 pixels is 610 pixels, the width of the table below.

O.K. my table is inserted. To center it, I had to go to the properties menu below and use the Align drop-down to center the table. When I first started typing the column expanded and squashed down the other columns. I then clicked into the next column and started typing, and the other columns moved over. Now I'm in a third column that looks squashed. As I clicked iinto the 4th column and continued to type, the other columns adjusted their width. When I clicked out of the cell, the four columns became approximately the same width.
To make all of the columns an equal 25%, I looked into the properties menu, found the cell part, and clicked into each cell and set the size as 25%. I am still learning. To select a cell, click into it. To select a row, you need to put your cursor to the left. It changes to an arrow, and click until the row is selected. To select the whole table, put your cursor near the bottom right. Right now, I am typing into a cell. It started in the middle. I can make the Vert -Top
I will put a nested table in the next column.

Be careful of your images pixel width and height when inserting in cells. It can make your nice even columns all messed up. It's best to adjust your images in an image editing program before putting them into your images folder.
You can merge cells. Click into one cell and drag into the other. Then go to Modify>Table>Merge Cells. See how image to the left stretches across two cells.
You can copy and paste whole tables with links enabled and paste into othe pages. That is what I did with the navigation bar.   You can end one table and put another table beneath it with different properties. If you take off the cell border, then you'll hardly know where one table ends and another begins.

I am inserting another table. I am setting it to be 100% of the page - 763 pixels. You want to make sure that any images you insert do not exceed this width.

You can also put links into a table. http://www.amityregion5.org
http://www.macromedia.com If you select "_blank" for the Target under your link, the link will open in a separated window on top of your page.
